"Some of France’s biggest football clubs are struggling to attract the best players after a spate of muggings and carjackings.
Fear of crime is becoming a significant deterrent as footballers in Paris, Marseilles and other cities become the target of violent attackers looking for easy pickings.
At least 11 players at Marseilles, the 1993 Champions League winners, have been robbed since 2011. The latest victim was Florian Thauvin, 23, a winger on loan from Newcastle United. In November he got out of his Mercedes Smart car to help two men who appeared to have had a motorcycle accident. They turned out to be muggers who tried to strangle him and steal his €25,000 watch.
Thauvin escaped without injury and with his watch but was said to have been badly shaken. Rod Fanni, 35, a defender for the club, said that similar attacks happened in other cities. “Unfortunately, it happens more often in Marseilles.”
